Apples and Cheese
03:02
|

Apples and Cheese
When I was a boy I wasn’t very bright
I didn’t know much but I knew what I liked
When Teacher sang the A B C’s
All I could sing was “apples and cheese”
[CHORUS]
Apples and cheese, apples and cheese,
Some sing praise for carrots and peas,
But nothin’ in the world can make a man say please
Like a great big plate of apples and cheese
When time came to learn about the birds and the bees,
My father shared his expertise
“Son, there ain’t no guarantees,
Except for the joys of apples and cheese”
Cortlan, Granny Smith, Macintosh and Macoun
Cheddar, Gouda, Brie, Swiss, Provolone
You’ll never find me on a hunger strike
For I never met an apple or a cheese I didn’t like
When I get to heaven let me tell you what I’ll do
I’ll be singin’ in the choir with the angels who
Raise their hands from bended knees
And praise the lord for apples and cheese

This is What I Said
03:04
|
|||
This is What I Said
Momma told me go and play and don’t make a mess
So I took out my paints ‘cause I like them best
Now on the living room wall I see
A mural of mommy and me
CHORUS:
And this is what I said
When they asked me what I did
Da da da da da da da da
Ta da da da da da da daaah
Once I found a little wall paper tear
I thought I’d rip it off ‘cause it shouldn’t be there
Now why did daddy growl and show his teeth
There’s a much nicer color underneath
I looked over yonder and what did I spy
The corner of a tablecloth very close by
I wondered what would happen if I gave it a tug
Gramma’s jigsaw puzzle on the rug
So when you get in trouble, and everybody does
Like when I used my grampa’s flute to bubble in the suds
Don’t get scared, just sing like me
Try it once, you’ll see.
LAST CHORUS:
This is what I say
And I say it every day
Da da da da da da da da
Ta da da da da da da daaah

The Fox
03:32
|
|||
The Fox
The fox went out on a chilly night
Prayed for the moon to give him light
For he had many a mile to go that night
Before he reached the town O (2x)
He ran til he came to a great big bin
Where the ducks and the geese were kept therein
Said, a couple of you are going to grease my chin
Before I leave this town O
He grabbed the grey goose by the neck
Throwed a duck across his back
He didn't mind the quack, quack, quack
And the legs all dangling down O
Then old mother Flipper-Flopper jumped out of bed
Out of the window she cocked her head
Crying, John, John the grey goose is gone
and the fox is on the town O
Then John he went to the top of the hill
Blew his horn both loud and shrill
The fox, he said, I better flee with my kill
Or they'll soon be on my trail O
He ran till he came to his cozy den
There were the little ones, eight, nine, ten
Saying, Daddy, daddy, better go back again
For it must be a mighty fine town O
Then the fox and his wife, without any strife
Cut up the goose with a carving knife
They never had such a supper in their life
And the little ones chewed on the bones O
[Repeat first verse.]

Old Man of the Woods
02:40
|
|||
Old Man of the Woods
There was an old man who lived in the woods, as you can plainly see
He said he could do more work in a day, than his wife could do in three
If this be so the old woman said, then this you must allow
That you must do my work for a day, while I go drive the plow
You must milk the Tiny cow, for fear she should go dry
And you must feed the little pigs that are within the stye
And you must watch the bracken hen, for fear she lay astray
And don’t forget to wind the yarn that I spun yesterday
[Break]
The old woman took the staff in her hand and went to drive the plow
The old man took the pail in his hand and went to milk the cow
But Tiny hinched, and Tiny flinched, and Tiny cocked her nose
And Tiny gave the old man such a kick, that the blood ran down to his toes.
Hey my good cow, Ho my good cow, and now my good cow stand still
If ever I milk this cow again it will be against my will
And when he milked the Tiny cow for fear she should go dry
Then he fed the little pigs that are within the stye
Then he watched the bracken hen for fear she lay astray
But he forgot to wind the yarn that his wife spun yesterday
He swore by all the leaves on the trees and all the stars in heaven
That his wife could do more work in a day, than he could do in seven.

Community
02:52
|
|||
Community
This is a little song about community
It’s really just a very simple thing
A community’s a group of individuals
Who have a common song to sing
It takes all kinds of voices, some can reach the high notes
Other voices sing the notes down low
We keep the rhythm with our feet
Walking forward to the beat
Participation is the key that makes it go!
A family’s a kind of a community
No two families are really quite the same
Some are large and some are small
They’ll pick/help you up if you should fall
And I’ve been told that mine is kind of strange
We tell jokes, and laugh a lot
Sometimes we argue round the clock
But we figured out - how to get along
Love is what it’s all about
In the end there is no doubt
That everybody in our family belongs
A neighborhood’s a kind of community
Many families - some you may not know
If they’re unknown to you
I’ll tell you what to do
When you see them on the street, say hello!
If they say “hello” to you it may sound different
This may be how they say it in their homes
Kon'nichiwa, jambo
Marha’baa, Nǐ hǎo,
Hola, bonjour, shalom!
The world is a kind of a community
Maybe that is why we call it “Mother Earth”
It’s just a bigger song to sing
With every living thing
And we sing on - through life, and death and birth
We don’t inherit this planet from our parents
We borrow it from our kids
Let’s make sure that we take care
Where it’s broken we’ll repair
So they receive a better planet than we did
[Repeat Verse 1, and the last line twice]

But as soon as I’m finished and they pull the plug
I put on my jammies, the one’s that have got
You guessed it! - - - stripes and spots!
CHORUS
CHORUS
Last line of 2nd chorus:

I'll Show You the Way
02:21
|
|||
I'll Show You the Way
Lay your head upon my breast
Match your breath to mine
Wrap your arms around my waist
Sleep will come in time
Though the night is cold and dreary
You are safe at home
When the world is mad and scary
You'll not be alone
[CHORUS]
Cast all care away my child
I am here to say
When it’s time to walk through darkness
I'll show you the way
The bad things that some people do
You may not understand
Ask and I’ll explain to you
Or tell you when I can't
This I know with all my heart
Though it may seem far away
Light will always follow dark
And I’ll show you the way
[CHORUS - and repeat last line]

Mostly I'm a Kid
I watched the news on TV
My parents were not home
The things that I saw scared me
It was hard to be alone.
I have so many questions, doubts
But I know that it’s not good
When they got home we talked about it
My parents understood
---
Now I'm marching with my family
A protest in the street
We made the signs we carry
Mine says “I’m speaking with my feet!”
It feels good to do something
Though I'm sure it won't erase
All that’s bad, but it’s a step to make
My world a better place
--
My parents say, “We grow up in stages
And be grateful for the blessing that each age is.”
---
I'll go play with Luna
She's the new dog we just got
Ride my bike, do some reading
Call my friends. We always laugh a lot
For dinner we'll have pizza
And talk of what we did
At 13 sometimes I feel grownup
But mostly, I’m a kid

Zapatito (Little Shoe)
02:35
|
|||
Zapatito (Little Shoe)
My super power is soccer
My shot’ll shock a blocker
It blows right by the stopper
My aim is true
A soccer ball torpedo
I am the M.V.P.-O
They call me Zapatito
Little shoe.
GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL !
Yes I am Zapatito
Quick as a mosquito
A supercharged neutrino
A billion watts
My dribble is a riddle
On the outside or the middle
Ain’t no goalie that’ll quibble
With my shots
GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL !
But when I’m in my jammies
On the couch with gramps and grammie
Trade soccer ball for lambie
Snug as bugs
There’s a book that they read to me
And a peace that runs right through me
It’s looking good for me
To score some hugs
GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL !
GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL !
YAY!

Tom Smith Boston, Massachusetts
“Folk music is still a living tradition that feeds on new songs that speak of people’s wants, needs, struggles and triumphs. Tom Smith is a man who writes songs that seem like they’ve always been there. There are very few songwriters working today that I would call folksingers, but I would call Tom Smith a true folksinger.” – Dave Palmeter, WUMB-FM Boston ... more
